BRIEF / SOLUTION Brief

Medium-sized suburban garden in Trinity.
Rectangular grassed space with nothing of interest to catch the eye.
The client had just moved into the house and is a keen ‘plants person’.
She wanted her garden to accommodate a pond, greenhouse and a small sitting area, and plenty of room for planting.
She was not keen on straight lines and wanted something flowing and organic.

Solution

I decided to split the garden into two ‘rooms’ using 3 arches.
The arches also provide a strong vertical element in the centre of the garden.
A dynamic curved gravel path, leading to the smaller sitting area, provides a link between the house and the small sitting area.
We removed a few paving slabs from the larger sitting area to create additional planting spaces. This helped soften the overall effect and create an interesting sitting space.
We used recycled Edinburgh street cobbles to edge the gravel path and terrace, which tied the hard landscaping areas together.
